VISIT TO CASTRONUÑO – WINTER 2013 – 2014

Grey Heron

Grey Heron

On Saturday 1 December we made a trip to the Nature Reserve Banks of Castronuño. We started our visit at the House of the Reserve, located in the village of Castronuño, with an excellent view of the Douro river and the Reserve in its whole. In this interpretation centre we were kindly informed about the best birdwatching locations. We continued our visit along the path Senda de los Almendros, which runs from Castronuño to the San José reservoir.

During our treacherous trail we had to go around several fallen trees on the path, and we could get sight of numerous specimens of great cormorant. Around half way of the path there is an observatory, from which we could watch a grey heron and several great crested grebes.

We continued walking to the isle formed by the sediments thrown from the spillways of the reservoir, which is a good place for birding. However, we were not so lucky this time, as we could just get sight of a little group of cormorants.

Our visit to Castronuño left us wanting more. We were not so lucky with birdwatching, although it is a very interesting place and we want to go back during the courting season of the great crested grebe.
